Of Thieves And Beggars
Backstabbing Bastard
THE REVIEW:
Backstabbing Bastard is a Finnish six-piece modern metal act which was formed in Joensuu in 2006. The band was formed after the members had burning fire to write aggressive metal songs filled with brutal riffs. After playing together for awhile the band recorded their first demo simply titled as “Demo 2006”. It contained quite strong material and the band started to get good reviews from the press. In 2007 after playing some local shows the band recorded a four song demo titled “The Premonition: New Era” which was once again well received. Now two years and countless shows after the band has unleashed their most mature offering to date, “Of Thieves And Beggars”.
This three song demo titled “Of Thieves And Beggars” contains really strong material that could be described as a mixture of modern melodic death metal and heavy metal. The vocals from Mika Varis are extremely varied ranging from death metal growling to clean singing to heavy metallic yelling bringing vocalists like Christian Älvestam (Scar Symmetry) into my mind. Already the exceptionally wide vocal range makes Backstabbing Bastard differ from the normal “demo” band but what´s also great to notice is that there´s a good band behind the vocalist in this case as well. The songs are really well put together containing enough tempo changes and catchy melodies to keep the listener motivated and enough aggression to make him want to bang his head. The opening track “The Modern Way To Sin” is really a kick ass track showcasing nicely how extremely diverse and potential this Joensuu based sexted really is. The guitar riffs are hooking, vocals nicely balanced and the drumming doesn´t over power those two giving them enough space to breathe.
I must admit that I was really positively surprised with “Of Thieves And Beggars”. I really didn´t expect much from a band named Backstabbing Bastard (seriously change it when you get signed, ok?) but what “Of Thieves And Beggars” offers is a high quality modern metal demo with enough hooks to get the label promoters interested. The band also made their way to the final voting in Sweden Rock Festival demo competition so check them out at www.myspace.com/mistabbed and give them a vote if you like them. They have definitely served it and hopefully the next release we will be hearing from these guys will be a full-length! Well done guys!
